Intercultural TheologyThough others have tried to emulate this project, only the University of Frankfurt could ever have invented it. Unparalleled anywhere in Germany, the Visiting Chair for Intercultural Theology was instituted by the Department of Catholic Theology in 1985. Held on an annual basis during the winter semester, the Chair offers participants in the Religion in Dialogue Ph.D. Programme an opportunity during their three years in Frankfurt to study under leading scholars from several distinct cultural settings. And to do so in the company of a highly international group of graduates from diverse cultural backgrounds. The lectures are complemented by two seminars, providing graduates with an opportunity to explore in depth and from a whole range of cultural perspectives the issues touched on in the lectures. Intercultural Theology also holds an annual international symposium, bringing together leading scholars from a variety of disciplines. An enticing prospect? Perhaps, yet for some programme participants this may be just the first step towards even more exciting horizons: Cooperation and ExchangeWithin the context of Intercultural Theology, the Department of Catholic Theology has already signed formal cooperation agreements with universities and other research institutes in Nigeria, India, South Korea and Brazil Not least, an agreement was recently signed with the Japanese Research Institute for Applied Ethics at the University of Hiroshima. Further such arrangements with universities in Argentina and Cameroon are now being negotiated. More are planned. Under these and similar agreements, exchange arrangements will be made that enable certain programme participants to spend limited periods of time studying and working on their Ph.D. theses at those universities. Some financial support for these activities may be available. For further informations see: http://www.thi.uni-frankfurt.de/index.html
